How to verify an Arizona contractor’s license

To verify an Arizona contractor, confirm five things: (1) the ROC license status reads “Active,” (2) the expiration date is in the future, (3) the classification matches the work you’re hiring for, (4) there are no disciplinary actions on file, and (5) the business name doesn’t appear on the AZ ROC unlicensed-violator list. You can check all five for free by searching the license number or business name.

Start with the ROC license number if you have it, or the exact business name. An active license with a future expiration date and a classification that covers your project is the baseline. A roofing job should be done by a contractor whose classification includes roofing — not a general license alone, depending on scope.

Then check the contractor’s track record: disciplinary actions (the ROC publishes these by case number) and whether the name shows up on the unlicensed-violator list are both red flags worth a conversation before you sign.

On PlumbIntel, every contractor page shows license status, classification, issue and expiration dates, disciplinary flags, and the contractor’s recent permit activity — so you can verify the license and see whether they’re actually active in your area, in one place, free.

Where can I verify an Arizona contractor for free?
Search the license number or business name on PlumbIntel’s contractor lookup — status, classification, expiration, and disciplinary flags, no signup required.
What if a contractor isn’t showing as licensed?
Confirm the spelling/number, then check the AZ ROC unlicensed-violator list. Work over $1,000 generally requires a license; an unlicensed contractor must disclose that they’re unlicensed.
Does an active license mean the contractor is reputable?
It’s necessary but not sufficient. Also check the expiration, classification fit, and any disciplinary history — and confirm they carry appropriate insurance.
