What is a contractor license bond in Arizona?

A contractor license bond is a surety bond Arizona contractors must file with the Registrar of Contractors to get and keep a license. It’s a financial guarantee that protects consumers and suppliers if the contractor violates ROC rules — for example, doing shoddy work or failing to pay for materials. The bond amount is set by classification and the contractor’s volume; if a valid claim is paid out, the contractor must reimburse the surety.

A bond is not the same as insurance. Insurance protects the contractor against losses; a license bond protects the contractor’s customers and suppliers, and the contractor is ultimately on the hook to repay any claim the surety covers. Both matter when you’re vetting a contractor.

Arizona also runs a Residential Contractors’ Recovery Fund — a separate pool that can compensate homeowners harmed by a licensed residential contractor when other remedies fall short. Access to that fund is one of the concrete reasons hiring a licensed contractor matters.

When you verify a contractor on PlumbIntel, you’re confirming the license that the bond backs is active and in good standing — the foundation for any bond or recovery-fund claim.
